How to Find Funding

Objective: To assist faculty and staff in searching for funding and promoting research, the Office of Research Development has created an e-learning overview course of how to find funding opportunities. Instruction includes how to register and search for grant opportunities using the Community of Science (COS) and Grants.gov.

Intended Audience: Administrative and other support staff, faculty and graduate students involved in the administration of research, training or other sponsored projects funded by extramural sources
Grants.gov Search Tools - To access the presentation you may view the complete grants.gov search tools course which includes all modules or view the individual modules below.
Basic Search This module leads you through the Basic Search function in grants.gov. Basic search allows users to search by keyword, Funding Opportunity Number (FON) or Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) number.

Browse by Category This module introduces you to the browse by category search function in grants.gov. The browse by category search allows users to search by a variety of categories of funding activities, such as environment, health, education, food and nutrition, etc.

Browse by Agency This module shows you how to use the browse by agency function in grants.gov. The browse by agency search allows users to search from a list of agencies offering grant opportunities including all 26 federal grant making agencies.

Advanced Search This module demonstrates how to use the advanced search function in grants.gov. The advanced search function allows users to search by more specific criteria such as funding instrument type, eligibility or sub-agency.
Community of Science (COS) Tools - To access the presentation you may view the complete COS search tools course which includes all modules or view the individual modules below.
Registration This module provides instructions on how to register for COS and introduces users to a variety of tools provided by COS to promote research. Registering for COS allows users to create an online profile with a CV, find funding and seek collaborators.

Simple Search This module guides you through the Simple Search function in COS. Simple search allows users to search by keyword only.

Main Search This module demonstrates how to use the main search function in COS. The main search function allows users to search by more specific criteria such as sponsor, deadline, keyword, eligibility, and funding type.

Search Wizard This module leads you through the Search Wizard tool, which is a step by step search function in COS. The search wizard allows users to search by specific criteria while providing an updated count of funding opportunities that are available as the user adds more criteria.

View by Sponsor This module shows you how to use the view by sponsor tool in COS. The view by sponsor search allows users to enter a sponsor name or search from a list of sponsors offering grant opportunities including federal, state, foreign, and corporate agencies and foundations.
